Scrabble Serious
I picked up these lazy susan bearings not sure exactly what I would need them for but knowing I was definitely going to be needing them. I used one on the alarm clock and now the other one is our new Scrabble game board turner. We’re getting real serious these days over Scrabble. We are playing it pretty much daily and we love it. And now we can turn the game board with a gentle turn of the wrist. Awesome. (That’d be a 50 point bonus word.)

I made it by using a 6″ lazy susan bearing (which is $2.50) and adhering it using E6000 glue to the bottom of three layers of black illustration board I had around the house which I cut to the size of the game board. The three layers of board, or cardboard, I glued together so it would be durable enough. I added some felt furniture pads to the bottom of the ball bearing since it’s metal and I didn’t want it scratching up the table. Game on.

Holy Smokes!!! My beau and I are scrabble junkies…he always plays upside down. Such a simple idea, why didn’t I think of that! We’re pretty serious about scrabble too…the word Jeep has stirred up some heat!!!
Good Luck on your game.

Good usage! Our board actually already has one built in, I guess it is the ‘deluxe’ edition. (You can lift off the board and store everything inside of it, even room for the dictionary) The turning makes it so much nicer.

Not nearly as aesthetically pleasing as your elegant solution, but I still highly recommend the big ol’ plastic deluxe edition with the built in lazy susan and the cozy little spots for letters so they don’t go crazy while you turn the board. Man, I love Scrabble.

This is SO fantastic! I saw it on Craft today and I am really excited to make it! I’m also including it in today’s Daily DIY.

I’m impressed! I’m also a scrabble junkie and this solves my penny-pinching policy of not buying the “deluxe edition.” Oops - Sorry Trina! I agree that having letters that didn’t slide would also be great. Heck, finding someone to play with me would be even better!!

Brilliant! My siblings and I have major Scrabble tournaments when we get together. We keep saying we need to do something like this. Now I know what to surprise them all with for Christmas! They can each get their own board.

What a great idea. I love the look of the wood deluxe Scrabble…but didn’t like the idea of such a high profile board. This one is lower to the table which I defintely prefer. I just bought a 1982 Deluxe Scrabble game which is a great board since it hold the letters in place nicely. Unfortunately I found that the turntable not only scrapes against the board making it difficult to turn, but the whole thing slides on my wood table making the turntable pretty much useless. I’m thinking about trying to remove the plastic turntable from the bottom and add the bearing used here…but I’m afraid I’m going to crack the plastic. Any suggestions?
