Bags for bread.
Lately, I have been getting more of our bread from Clover + Crumpet, which they are selling through the Savannah Food Coop right now, because I just never seemed to get a groove with making my own bread.

However, the order cycle is only every 2 weeks so I am trying to see how long I can get it to last. Before I made a bread bag, it was getting dried out by day 3. This week, after picking it up on Thursday, it’s still yummy good today. Awesome! So far, I have an extra day and I bet I’ll get even another day or two which is perfect since by then it will be gone. (And then I get an excuse to pick up a loaf from Back in the Day!)

I saw that Amanda tried out a few bread bags and it worked to extend the life of her bread just a little longer too, so that was just the validation I needed to get on it! I had seen these Stelton bread bags awhile back and think they would make awesome options to for serving as well as storage but, for now, decided to just make a simple drawstring bag. I used an old tablecloth linen that was given to me recently and Dritz 5″ tall iron-on numbers which transferred really beautifully. (The package looks like this, I found them at my local craft store). Seriously, I know sometimes iron-ons are hit or miss but these must transfer some type of almost vinyl looking cutout rather than transferring an ink or a dye. The finish of the iron-on is flat and smooth, I haven’t washed it yet but it looks great so far, no bleeding through to the bottom layer and no half-transferred lighter areas.

I store the loaf in the bag in my bread box and it really has helped it stay fresh longer, I say its definitely worth it. And if you want to make a drawstring bag, there are tons of tutorials online for lined and unlined versions, just do a Google search. I used an unlined bag for the bread so it could still breath a bit and found that I learned to make mine just like Pascale over at Between the Lines makes hers! She has a great tutorial via this link showing how to do it step-by-step so definitely check it out. No need to replicate the effort over here, too.

totally lovely bag! We are avid bread eaters, but there is only two of us, so it’s always hard to find ways to keep the bread! thanks for the tip!

that is a really great idea. i just shoved a loaf last night into an old plastic bag; the drawstring would be such a more pleasant experience!

Very good idea! I should try one here, our bread goes quickly because of the heat in the summer (and spring and fall!)

Awesome idea! I love fresh bread but I always hate how it doesn’t last long. I’ll have to make one of these.

This is a great idea. I wish our Farmer’s Market weren’t just for two hours on Saturday morning. I will be in Savannah in two weeks for my birthday, I think I will check out the CoOp. : )
