I made a shirt.
I have several larger pieces of fabric I have been squirreling away for some clothes but I have been chickening out cutting into my more favorite pieces. After seeing Amy’s quite patriotic dress, I decided it was high time I cut into my Nani Iro Mini Pocho Dots (bought from Matatabi) and sew a shirt in time for my family’s big fourth celebration. I had been soaking in all the amazing clothes over at Katie Did and want them all in my size. And while I wait with anticipation for the patterns she is working on, I decided to just wing it. Yes, they are children’s clothes but still, I figure I can make them work. Here’s what happened when I winged it.

The shirt was inspired by the second shirt down on this post by Katie. And since the front didn’t quite look as cute on me with just the plain simple fold at the top, I added a short little folding action inspired by the twist T by Martha of UNIFORM Studio. It wasn’t intentional, it just happened as I was trying to fix the way the top fell. Her collections are always so amazing. I love the way she constructs and folds her pieces. Brilliant. Apparently, it’s seeping in my headspace which is awesome.

Ignore the wrinkled up backside on that one side but the back is pretty much all Katie’s top with a few more buttons and a bottom band. I used the Burda 7969 dress pattern as a general basis for the top proportions, just made them longer to give me some fold space. I fudged and changed it quite a bit though so I can’t imagine recreating this exactly but I dig it. The fabric is so comfortable even though it looks slightly fussy and has to be ironed.

I love how it’s double gauze season all over the interwebs. Your top is lovely. Maybe now I’ll dig into my little stash of the stuff and make that Collette Patterns dress I’ve been meaning to make for weeks now… If only it weren’t so chilly here in Chicago at the moment, maybe I’d feel more double gauze inspiration!
