Another stencil, another day
I’m fairly certain all week will be more freezer paper stencils since I can’t get enough of them. It’s wickedly easy and too much fun to move on from just yet. Although soon I’ll have to move on from these shirts so it’s not all I wear from here to eternity. But this is the one.

The closest I shall ever get to this most wonderful shirt. Oh just look how lovely the Built by Wendy one is…the Marcel Dzama illustration and all. Sweet loveliness. I had to settle for the only one I could make. The stencil was inspired by all the crazy wonderful paper cuttings Hans Christian Andersen apparantly made. (Need to go to the library and find more images. Some online here but just do a search for his name + paper cuts and you’ll find more. Look at this picture book of his, click the arrows to turn the page, fascinating.)

All right, a few questions on the stuff in addition to Amy’s wonderfully brilliant post. This is freezer paper and here’s one step-by-step over at Craftster. The image links are broken but it does at least verbally tell you what to do. I found don’t set the iron on too hot a setting or the paper crinkles + burns a bit and leaks happen. Don’t water down the ink or it runs. If using the ink on dark colors, I had to apply a couple of thin coats and it worked like a charm. Oh and try hard to resist peeling off the stencil before it dries. It’s excruciatingly difficult for me but otherwise, it’s bound to mess it up. Okay, I already have one more almost done and another shirt cut out so you’ll be seeing more tomorrow. I’ll also try and get a picture of it worn one of these days.
edit: Here you go, it’s on.

Seems to me that these become addicting to a lot of people…leaves me a little worried for when I try it.

Awesome job! I too love Built by Wendy, but am without the funds to own any. I like your version even better, and hey, you saved $135! I’m with Hannah…did you make up your own pattern? If it’s a purchased pattern would you mind telling us which one it is? On the subject of Freezer Paper Week, I say “bring it”!

okay guys, here’s the deal. first off, i’m in total agreement, the built by wendy shirt is awesome and if I had the dough i’d definitely buy it. totally worth it. but if you have to go it my way i based my shirt on this pattern which is Simplicity 4589. however, it is a not a full collar shirt and the sleeves were wrong so i had to base the collar shape on another shirt I own that fit nicely around the neck and then to fit it over your neck you have to split the back top piece and add a tie at the top. if you do this, then you also need to cut two front collar and two back collar pieces (of both left and right side back pieces) instead of messing with neck facing. i also had to do some slight fudgy to the sizing of the armholes on the pattern. so it’s based on the pattern but with reworking some stuff. so there you go, anybody still with me?

This is amazing, Sarah! Why, oh why are blouses to darn intimidating to me? I need to get over it, and then I can be saving the big bucks like you. Thanks for the everyday inspiration, lady!
