The Best of… Family Tree
The following is a post from The Small Object blog originally hosted over on Blogger that has since been deleted. This post was originally published in April 2005.
“I made a family tree that was easy and allowed me to include all the information we currently know so it might be a format you could use. It’s easy and was flexible enough that if I didn’t know some information there wasn’t a bunch of blank spaces + it looks really cool!I used just paper scraps cut all the same size for the squares + used a plastic square box (the bottom edges of it) that I stamped into a blue stamp pad to make the squares on them all. The siblings of each are of various sized paper strips depending on the length of the name. All names were played around with to see how to fit them all and then glued to a fabric backing which I had prestretched over a store bought poster frame backing. The tree starts with me in the middle bottom, and branches off with my mom’s side to the right and my fathers to the left.

I especially love the two elementary school pictures of my mom + dad, hung on their corresponding sides of the tree. (How long did it take? One afternoon to make.)”

I love this! it’s so graphic yet very organic. the little scraps with the names are so simple, but they look great. i have a huge family (both my parents are one of seven and i’m one of six) and i’ve been wanting to do a family tree for so long. this has inspired me to jump start that project.

What a great idea! I’m going to a family reunion soon, and that would be a neat thing to take with me, so all the long-lost relllies could see where they fit in. Thanks for the inspiration!
